After months of planning and preparation, production began on the Carnival (Midway) Project. The first shoot took place July 27-29, 2009 at the Porter County Fair in Valparaiso, IN. I shot footage of people riding the Feuerball (Fireball) and the Starship Area 51 (also known as the Gravitron). Here are some behind-the-scenes shots of the Fair and stills from the Feuerball.

Aaron:
How did you keep the bumper cars from wacking-off your camera?!
Funny story, it didn’t work.
Aaron, I now share your fascination with state fairs. I went to the Ohio State Fair twice last year (2010) and did a lot of photos there. Everything looks so magical at a fair, but it is still rooted in this weirdly mundane reality of average people in their summer shorts, eating really bad food. Looking at this project, it gets me thinking that I should visit a series of fairs this year, and make a project out of it. It’s nice to know you’ve stayed so active in the arts. Thank you for the inspiration.
