Spiral is a video that documents Thoru, a flatland BMX rider, practicing. Throughout his successes and failures, he is constantly moving, learning, honing his skills.

Video artists from more than 31 countries are competing at the 16th International Video Festival Videomedeja in Studio M, Novi Sad, from 14 to 16 December 2012. Along, there is a special programmes – selection of national video art as well as presentations and screenings by jury members Harald Hund (Austria), Aleksandar Davić (Serbia) and Manuel Saiz (Spain).

Residency and Showing at DEFIBRILLATOR

This July, I’m the Artist in Residence at DEFIBRILLATOR (dfbrl8r), a gallery in Chicago that shows some really great performance art.

First, I’ll be working with some of the footage that I shot in Japan. I have such an abundance of material, I hope I can make sense of it all. I captured many different things, but the thing that seems to connect most of them seems to be that they are all involve people doing repetitive things. Sometimes, it’s playful–surfers bobbing in the waves–and sometimes, it’s work–fishermen winding rope into tall cylindrical forms. I think of each of them as drawings, or moving photographs, and while I was shooting them even named them after forms– semicircle, ellipse, cylinder… Check out my Japan post to see some of the stills.

Also, I’ll be finding some new things to shoot in Chicago. I hope I can get some of those up, too!

I will be showing what I’ve created on July 27th beginning at 8pm. There will be a little reception, so please stop by, and bring your friends!

Shooting in Japan

I recently returned from spending a month in Japan, shooting what is the beginning of my newest project. It examines the repetitive gestures that fill our life, in work and in play.

I was staying in Katase, about an hour away from Tokyo. It’s a smallish beach town–a tourist destination–especially for daytrippers from Tokyo looking for a little sand and sun. At first I thought I’d spend most of my time in nearby Kamakura (nicknamed little Kyoto because it is filled with temples) or heading to Tokyo, but there was plenty to keep me busy in a few mile radius, so I borrowed a bike with enough baskets for me and my gear. I recently started shooting with a RED Scarlet, and it’s definitely increased the size of my kit.

These guys fish with tourists as a part of a weekly party. They’d tow large nets out into the water from the beach, and then wind them in. By the time the nets hit the beach, all the (paying) tourists would help pull the nets in the last bit and eat some extremely fresh fish.

In Fujisawa, the closest city, I came across firefighters practicing for a competition held between different fire stations. The event was called the “Rope Bridge Rescue” and consists of two firefighters crossing a rope, grabbing a third man and bringing him back. The trick is that all the harnesses must be made of rope, and they have to tie them during the competition. I was able to spend a couple afternoons with the firefighters, shooting them while they practiced.

I also shot a local BMX flatland rider practicing. Thoru was one of the nicest and most talented guys I met, and he let me hang out with him for hours.

I did make it to Tokyo

While I was there I shot these really great kids practicing for an online dance competition. They were on fire!

Most of these images, are stills pulled from footage I shot. As they begin to take shape, I’ll be sure to post some more (and some moving images) so that you get a better idea what I’m up to. This project was partially funded by the University of Pittsburgh Office of Research, I’m really grateful for their support!

Terminal Physical Space presents the entire Metamorphoses series: Michael, Britney, George, Biggie and Oprah. This project was shot at Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum. It documents transgressive and playful interactions that occur as people perform and stage encounters with “celebrities”.
